District Tournament Teams – Overview & Tryout Information

Each summer, our league participates in Little League District Tournament play. These teams represent our league in competitive games against other local leagues, with the opportunity to advance through Sectionals, States, and beyond.

What Are District Tournament Teams?

District Tournament teams are all-star teams formed at the end of the regular spring season. These teams compete in a higher level of play and are made up of selected players from across our league.

Tournament play typically begins in early summer (late June into early July) and requires a strong commitment from players and families.

Baseball Tournament Divisions

  • 8–10 Division
  • 9–11 Division
  • 10–12 (Little League Major Division)this is the most prominent division that leads to the Little League World Series
Not every league/district offers all divisions every year (depends on participation numbers).

Why Do We Hold Separate Tryouts?

Our District Tournament teams are separate from our regular spring and travel teams, and we hold dedicated tryouts for several important reasons:

  • Open Opportunity for All Players
Tryouts allow every eligible player in the league a fair chance to be considered, regardless of what team they played on during the spring season.
  • Different Level of Commitment
Tournament teams require a more intensive schedule, including frequent practices and games. Tryouts help identify players and families ready for that commitment.
  • Team Selection Based on Current Performance
Player development can change quickly. Tryouts give managers the opportunity to evaluate players based on their current skills, effort, and readiness.
  • Balanced Team Building
Coaches are building a roster to compete at a high level, which often requires a mix of pitching, defense, hitting, and positional depth that may differ from regular-season team construction.
  • Age Requirements Differ from our Spring Travel
It’s important to note that Little League uses a different age cutoff than our regular spring travel teams. Our spring/travel teams are formed using the Cal Ripken (Babe Ruth) age chart, which determines age based on a specific cutoff date. Little League District Tournament teams follow the official Little League Baseball age chart, which uses its own cutoff date and age determination rules. Because of this difference, a player’s “Little League age” may not match the age group they played in during the spring season. Players must be placed in the appropriate Little League tournament division based on their Little League age, not their travel team age.

How Tryouts Work

  • Tryouts are open to all eligible players within the appropriate age divisions.
  • Players will be evaluated on:
    • Hitting
    • Fielding
    • Throwing
    • Pitching/Catching (if applicable)
    • Attitude and effort
  • Evaluations are conducted by a selection committee, which may include league coaches and board members.

Details such as dates, times, and locations will be communicated in advance.

Team Selection Process

  • After tryouts, managers and the selection committee will meet to form the tournament teams.
  • Rosters are built based on overall ability, positional needs, and team balance.
  • Selected players will be notified directly, and information regarding practices and schedules will follow shortly after.

Player Commitment Expectations

Players selected for a District Tournament team are expected to:

  • Attend all scheduled practices and games (barring conflicts communicated in advance)
  • Demonstrate strong sportsmanship and teamwork
  • Represent our league with pride and respect

Tournament schedules can be demanding, especially if teams advance, so families should be prepared for a multi-week commitment.

Final Notes

Participation in District Tournament teams is a privilege and honor, and we encourage all interested players to attend tryouts. Even if a player is not selected, the experience is valuable and helps support their continued development.

We’re proud of all our players and look forward to a competitive and exciting tournament season!
